about Inspire-works

Inspire-works are world music specialists working with over 40,000 children and young adults in over 450 schools throughout South East England each academic year.

Inspire-works was devised by its two core members, Mike and Jacqui Simpson - a professional musician/teacher and a theatre director/teacher of dance & drama respectively - who studied and researched Balinese arts whilst living on the island. They call upon the expertise, knowledge and practical approach of additional facilitators as workshop leaders and assistants.

what we do

Inspire-works facilitators

We aim to deliver specialist music workshops in schools and youth communities that enrich and extend the National Curriculum by providing rich, stimulating, exciting activities from Indonesia, South America and West Africa.

We offer high-quality workshops by experienced practitioners and teachers. Workshops can be tailor-made according to the specific needs of a group.

In our workshops, pupils are actively involved, take a full part in the creative process and experience a sense of pride and achievement. They are encouraged to aim for a high level of skill and to express their ideas while performing with others.

Target group: Teachers of KS2- & KS3-aged children

  • 22nd February 2010: West African drumming
  • 23rd February 2010: Indonesian gamelan music
  • 24th February 2010: Brazilian samba drumming

“Excellent! The best INSET course I’ve been on!” Ian Tunnell, Delegate at the 2009 Windsor Castle INSET.

Inspire-works will be returning to St George’s School, Windsor Castle for our lively INSET sessions which provide teachers with the necessary tools for teaching Balinese gamelan music, West African drumming and Brazilian samba in the classroom and enhance their practical work with pupils. In these fully ‘hands-on’ sessions, all participants will play Inspire-works' authentic Balinese gamelan orchestra, Brazilian samba drums and Ghanaian djembés.

“Very well presented – from parking the car to coffee, lunch etc. Clearly & imaginatively presented. Fantastic day! Going to have a ‘Brazilian‘ day at school to raise money for instruments! Will samba with whole school on the playground!!” Beverley Cheeseman, Delegate at the 2009 Windsor Castle INSET.

In these dynamic and fun sessions our highly experienced facilitators will make references to how the Balinese Arts, West African Drumming or Brazilian samba relate to the Key Stages 1, 2, & 3 National Curriculum and to Key Stage 4 and 5 qualifications. They will share a wide range of ideas and offer very practical advice on how to teach these styles in the classroom.

“Very well structured – I liked it that we got to recap on stuff and visit the actual resources we take home; teachers are not exactly plentiful on time!” Hannah Wilberforce, Delegate at the 2009 Windsor Castle INSET.

Extensive workshop notes are provided for all participants including sample lesson plans.

“Very good value with facilitators taking different roles to present training and plenty of opportunity to ask questions.” Amanda Munday, Delegate at the 2009 Windsor Castle INSET.

Course Costs: £125.00 per day (sandwich lunch and refreshments included).
